What is an Air Source Heat Pump and should I get one? November 09, 2022 What is a Heat Pump?Heat pumps are currently the greenest choice on the market and are a low-carbon, eco-friendly source of heat. They take energy from the air outside and convert it into heat, which is used for your home including your hot water. It can also heat water stored in a hot water cylinder for your hot taps, showers and baths. What are the advantages of installing a Heat Pump?Aside from being energy efficient, they can closely match the running costs of other household heating systems. Based on figures from the Energy Saving Trust a 4-bedroom house with a gas boiler could cost you between £2000 and £2500 per year, depending on its age and efficiency. Whereas a Heat Pump could cost around £1,900 per year. Although we do not know what the cost of gas will be over the coming years, it is a safe prediction based on the current climate, that prices are not set to decrease for gas anytime soon. Air Source Heat Pumps also have a long service life and are considered low maintenance throughout their life span. Lastly, although they are called “Heat Pumps” some systems can also provide cooling in the summer months. Are they suitable for all properties? Air Source Heat Pumps are situated outside of your home, fitted to either a wall or the ground. It must have space around it to allow a good flow of air. Inside, they work with both radiators and underfloor heating systems. However, you will need space inside for a water storage tank. If you are considering one, book an appointment with ACL Plumbing & Heating and we can survey your property and advise you on where it would be best placed on your property. How loud is a Heat Pump? Heat Pumps do omit a similar noise volume to a fridge. If you were standing close by, you could easily hold a normal conversation next to it, without raising your voice. As the weather gets colder and the system needs to work harder, you may find the noise rise slightly. How much does an Air Source Heat Pump cost?To install a Heat Pump, you would be looking at an investment of £12,000 to £18,000 depending on the make and model you choose, as well as the property you are installing one in. However, there are government incentives available through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, where you could be eligible for £5000 off the cost of installing a Heat Pump.
